What Does It Mean To Work As A Model?

Your Looks Will Matter
Getting work as a model ultimately depends on the way that you look. Don’t worry, in modern times, this isn’t as restrictive as it once was, but you’ll have to keep on top of your appearance regardless. In the past, you could only really work as a model if you were tall and super slim, and whilst this is not necessarily the case now, you’ll still be judged aesthetically. If you’re a plus sized model or a petite model, for example, finding work as a model will depend on the way you present yourself at castings, and the quality of your portfolio, among many other looks-based things. As modelling can be seen as an art form, work as a model depend on you conforming to visual ideals.

When you work as a model, not every day will entail steady work. Unless you’re at the top of your field, work as a model will be time consuming even when you’re not on a shoot. For example, the times in between jobs will consist of networking, both in person and via email and through your agency. If you’re freelance, you’ll be seeking out new connections, through a multitude of different avenues.
When you’re actually on a shoot, you’ll have a lot of hanging around to do. There may be very little food or things to keep you entertained. You’ll need to remain polite and friendly, whilst going through lots of costume changes and having your make up and hair done.
You’ll need to take direction and remember that you’re there to work. This may involve taking criticism for things that you feel are unfair or can’t change, such as a the way you look. To combat this, you’ll have to provide a range of poses to show that you’re versatile and flexible.
You Will Meet Lots Of People
From agency staff to people who work in casting, through to make up artists and fellow models, you will meet a lot of people. Not good with faces? You’ll need to work on that. When you work as a model, you’ll soon find that often, it’s not about what you know, it’s about who you know.
It’s all about making connections and being professional enough to keep them on side!
It’s A Lifestyle, Not A Job.
When you work as a model, it’s not like other lines of work. Every choice that you make will affect your career. Everything from what you eat, what you wear and who you speak to forms part of the bigger picture. You’ll need to be prepared to make sacrifices and really take care of yourself and your body and health.
You may have to travel far from home to work as a model. There will be family occasions that you might have to miss, birthday cakes you’ll have to say no to, and nights out you’ll have to turn down.
Don’t worry – it’s so rewarding to work as a model, but it takes a lot of dedication.
