UK Modelling: A Modelling Career Nationwide
UK modelling is possible no matter which city you live in. Although London is the fashion capital of the nation – and therefore where the most jobs and opportunities are, there are a world of opportunities elsewhere as well, some big and some small, depending on your level.
Is UK Modelling For Me?
Modelling can be done almost anywhere in the UK, although most agencies will be based in big cities. Whilst shoots may take place ‘on location’ – basically anywhere – you might be required to travel to places like Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow and other cities to name but a few. Obviously, London is at the heart of the UK modelling industry, so it’s also very likely you’ll be down there at some point.
Although London seems very glam, there are some great opportunities to be had in UK modelling as a whole. Other cities will give you appreciation for the industry on a smaller scale, often whilst facing less fierce competition.
It’s also a lot more practical to model closer to home whilst still in school. A lot of models are quite young, and require parental supervision. Your family will be much more likely to support your dreams if they can be realised near to where they live (because they’re the ones forking out for expenses until you make a name for yourself).
The UK is relatively small compared to other countries, which makes it possible to work out of one base and travel. UK modelling is unique in this respect, as many other countries don’t quite have this luxury and have to choose to uproot perhaps before they’re ready! Alternatively, they miss out on their dreams due to distance, which is really sad, especially if they have potential.
Should I Consider A Move To London?
Moving to London and travelling to London for certain opportunities are two very different things. London is a very expensive city to live in, reflecting its above-average opportunities for experiences across the spectrum. You should only really consider moving to London for your modelling career if your UK modelling elsewhere has got you to the point where this is now unavoidable.
For example, if you have been working with a London-based agency and they tell you that London is where they want you to be based, this might well be a good enough reason. However, you should still do a cost/benefit analysis. Is the money you will be bringing
Of course, we don’t recommend moving to London unless you’re over the age of 18. You can move after the age of 16, however this will be a challenge both financially and workwise, too. Most reputable agencies will only allow you to make autonomous career decisions over the age of 18, so unless your family are willing to move with you, you may face many blocks in the meantime without your parent or guardian’s permission. If you’re showing promise with your other UK modelling, it’s unlikely to fade. Just stick at it until you’re old enough and London will stil be waiting for you!
What are your experiences of UK modelling? We’d love to hear about them!
