Behind The Scenes At A Model Photoshoot

Got a model photoshoot coming up? Awesome! Whether you’ve scored your first modelling job (congratulations), or you’re building up your portfolio, it’s an exciting time. It’ll be fun, but there’s a chance if you’re on the job that it’ll also be really hard work. If you’re shooting for the first time, you may even be nervous, or not know what to expect. We’ve got some top tips for newbies and experienced models alike.

A Model Photoshoot For Beginners

A model photoshoot when you’re starting out doesn’t need to be a paid job. In fact, building up your portfolio is vital before you can even consider the idea of any paid work. Think of it like your CV or resume in the world of modelling. At a model photoshoot when you’re starting out, you’re best to come prepared. Unlike on bigger shoots, there may not be make up artists and hair stylists on hand to help you create the look.

It’s important you spend time choosing outfits and maybe even watching videos on how to create striking make up looks. This is because at this point, you’re doing a model photoshoot to sell you, the model. Later in your career this will become secondary, as people will want to know how your look can help them push their brand. However, at first, it’s all about making yourself look the best you can be.

At UK Models, they offer a portfolio service which can take some of the scariness out of finding a photographer to work with. They’ll help you to look your best and give you direction on how to pose with a professional photographer. You’ll also learn about image editing and touch ups.

You should never go to a photographer or company for a model photoshoot if they’re not reputable or your gut instinct is telling you not to. Sadly, some people will try to exploit you. Never hand over money to someone unless you’re clear what they’re able to offer in return!

A Model Photoshoot For Experienced Models

If you’re progressing to paid work, bigger clients or you’re just nosy, there are a few things you’ll need to know about the world of modelling and going to shoots.

Firstly, you should always act professional. Even if you’ve been a model for years, coming in and acting like a diva or demonstrating out of control behaviour won’t cut it, and unless you’re a household name, they can just hire someone else. Pulling a brand into disrepute can cost you a contract or even your career, so you must be polite and well-behaved at all times.

A model photoshoot at this stage isn’t really about showcasing you, it’s about using you and your existing talents to showcase a brand in some way. Whether it’s editorial, runway or catalogue work, you must be willing and able to follow direction, use your initiative and demonstrate versatility.

Showing up on time to any model photoshoot at this stage is imperative – it’s your job! You should also read the call sheet to see what preparations are expected of you. Do you have to put on base make up, or will this all be taken care of. Do you need to bring nude underwear, or wash your hair beforehand? Always check.

At a professional level, there will be an entire team working at your model photoshoot, and you’ll form just one part. There are make up artists, stylists, directors, photographers, brand reps and an array of other people. Always work with them respectfully and take on board what you are told.
